Books to Consider

Here are a list of books that you might consider.   Please send in ideas of books your family has loved so we can share those ideas too.  We are trying to stick to books that our family really cherished since we believe children learn to love reading by reading only the best books!

First Grade Read Aloud

A Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes

Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield

Read aloud for 4th grade and up:

Little Britches, by Ralph Moody--We read the entire series as a family read aloud and loved them all.

Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw

Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham

Walk the World's Rim by Baker--maybe only loved by those Texas history nuts.

Justin Morgan had a Horse by Henry--the movie couldn't do it justice.

Readers for fourth grade:

The Door in the Wall by De Angeli

The Whipping Boy by Fleischman

The Toothpaste Millionaire by Merrill-just for fun.

The Journeyman by Yates--Cameron particularly loved this book.

Stone Fox by Gardiner--be ready for tears

Junior High and up readers:

Keeper of the Bees by Jean Stratton Porter

Sign of the Beaver by Speare

Freckles by Jean Stratton Porter

Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain--Ryan has read this book three times!

Adult books:

The Long Gray Line by Rick _______  Fascinating book about Vietnam and 1967 class of West Point, has language but certainly gives an unbiased view of Vietnam

Margin by Swenson  This book will challenge you to be ruthlessly protective of your calendar and commitments.

Ordering Your Private World by Macdonald

Mere Christianity  by C.S. Lewis
